How to charge at home.

Charge your electric car or plug-in hybrids conveniently at home. The best time is at night, when the car is not in use and there is most excess electricity. Get into the charged vehicle in the morning and enjoy the pleasure of driving. By providing e-tron charging systems, Audi offers a powerful, intelligent, and holistic charging concept.

1: Home check and installation.

The home check, which is subject to charge, is a professional check of your electrical installation suitability for charging an electric car. You can order this directly from your Audi partner for a fee.

An electrician will advise you on charging options, and inform you about the best possible charging solution with optimum charging times and costs. The electrician can also plan the integration of any existing photo-voltaic system. Should the electrician recommend adjustments to your house electrical system, they will prepare an individual offer for you.

2: Install a home wall box.

A wall box is the best way to charge your electric Audi at home. A 7kW home wall box charges your car overnight, so it’s ready for you in the morning.

3: The compact e-tron charging system.

Should cars be charged at a domestic or industrial socket? The modular e-tron compact charging system gives you maximum flexibility, with a vehicle connection cable and two mains connection cables ¬– one with a household plug and one with an industrial plug. The e-tron charging system compact has a charging capacity of up to 11 kW. On the control unit, the user can manually switch between 100 percent and 50 percent charging performance. This can be useful if various other electrical appliances are already in use at home. If using a domestic socket please consult an electrician before plugging in for the first time.

Benefits of the Audi e-tron charging system

  • Blackout protection : The e-tron connect charging system charges your vehicle with the maximum power available in your home infrastructure, provided a compatible Home Energy Management System (HEMS) is available. Whenever other electrical appliances are used in your home, the system automatically reduces the charging capacity to your car. This will increase as home appliances are switched off, avoiding power blackouts caused by overloading your home connection fuse.

  • Cost-optimised charging : When planning the charging process, the system takes into account the your electricity provider’s current and future prices, as well as the desired departure times, and favours charging times that incur the lowest electricity costs for you.

  • Solar energy use : If you have your own photovoltaic system, you can optimise your e-tron vehicle's charging process so that it is charged with as much solar power as possible. The charging plan can be calculated using forecasts with sunny weather and your desired departure times.

  • Pin protection : You can protect your charging system from unauthorised use by setting up a 4-digit PIN.

  • Software updates : Your charging system will always be up to date, with regular software updates.

Public charging.

Whether it's the freedom to drive very long distances with an electric car or the flexibility to charge it as needed when you're taking a break. Or simply because you like having an alternative when charging at home is not an option. Whatever is important to you personally – in all three cases, a public charging infrastructure is crucial.

1: Charge from 5% up to 80% in just 30 minutes.

With charging power of 150kW, the Audi e-trons only need 30 minutes to charge from 5% to 80% on a high-power charging (HPC) unit. And they only need another 20 minutes to reach 100%.

2: Unique e-tron charging power.

The charging performance of the Audi e-tron sets new standards, with a 150 kW charging curve that stands out for its high level of stability. This is based on intelligent battery management, which lowers the currents to protect the lithium-ion cells and ensure their service life.

This means everyday convenience, as to reach a range of 100 kilometres, you just need to spend less than 10 minutes at the charging station.

Charge anywhere.

Maximising your range.

Depending on your location and driving style, there are ways you can improve your Audi EV’s range.

Steps to increase your range
  • Set a higher recuperation rate : An electric Audi can harvest the kinetic energy generated by braking and coasting, and converts it to an electric charge that’s channelled back to the battery. This is known as recuperation.

  • Use Efficiency or Range Modes : The Audi e-tron has an economical driving mode which helps maximise your range. Efficiency mode changes settings to the drivetrain, transmission, air conditioning, cruise control (or optional adaptive cruise control) that will help extend your range.

  • Limit heating and air conditioning : Heating and air conditioning are particularly power-hungry, impacting range by as much as 30%. By limiting them or switching them off, you can significantly improve your range.

  • Pre-condition your car while on charge : Cooling or heating the vehicle while it’s being charged is a good way to conserve energy and boost range.

Influence your driving range.

Planning ahead and adopting an economical driving style will have the most influence on range. Find out more below.

Factors that influence your range

  • Your personal driving style
  • The driving profile
  • Traffic conditions
  • Temperature and weather
  • The vehicle’s condition
  • Accessories fitted
  • The weight of a load
  • Auxiliary systems like air conditioning & heating

How does the outside temperature affect my range?

The chemical make-up of the Audi e-tron’s battery means that it’s at its most efficient when outdoor temperatures are at around 20°C. This is because the e-tron battery operates best at its optimal temperature range (between 20°C and 30°C), whereas colder outside temperatures require more energy to get it to its optimum. That’s why, when it’s excessively hot or cold outside, you’ll notice an impact on your mileage range. Plus, you’re more likely to use applications like defrosting, heating and heated seats during cold weather (and air conditioning when it’s hot).

How do heating and air conditioning affect my range?

Most auxiliary systems in a car require electrical power from the battery, with heating and air conditioning consuming the most energy on an electric vehicle. In fact, up to 30% of an electric car’s mileage range can be used up in this way. Where possible, try to limit excessive heating or cooling, as the higher the settings, the more battery energy is consumed. We also recommend pre-heating or pre-cooling your car while it’s charging, you can do this remotely via the myAudi app remote features.

How do different driving profiles affect my range?

Like a conventional combustion-powered car, the type of driving you’re doing, such as motorway or city driving, will affect its energy consumption – and therefore its range. Unlike a combustion car, which is typically most efficient at constant speeds with less frequent acceleration, such as on motorways, an electric car is least efficient at the higher speeds achieved on these types of road. This is because the aerodynamic drag working against the car becomes proportionately much greater at high speed, which means it requires more energy.
